Agreement on nuclear commerce in ''few months'' but quietly India may stay away from American nuclear technology

Dec. 19, 2006

The euphoria about potential $100 billion nuclear reactor sales to India among American companies can be short lived. India internally is not happy with the nuclear bill. It will be hesitatnt to welcome any American nuclear technology in the country.
What India needed is the nuclear agreement. It will make America compete with French and Russians before awarding any contract.
A bilateral agreement on nuclear commerce with India will be signed in the next "few months" and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is expected to approve nuclear trade with New Delhi, a senior US official has said.
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns expressed confidence the agreement with India under Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act, which governs nuclear commerce with other nations, would be signed in a "few months".
The 45-member NSG is also expected to give its nod to nuclear trade with India, Burns told reporters here yesterday shortly after President George W Bush signed into law a bill to implement the Indo-US nuclear deal.
