Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf released approximately 1,300 female prisoners
Media Release
Jul. 9, 2006

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf released approximately 1,300 female prisoners July 7 as part of an effort to eliminate elements of the justice system that discriminate against women. Women facing charges of adultery and other offenses were freed on bail, while those facing charges of murder and terrorism remain incarcerated. Musharraf has also recommended amending the Hudood Ordinance, which currently considers a woman on trial for extra-marital sex guilty of adultery unless she can prove she was raped.
