Japan demanded July 5 that South Korea stop a survey of the waters of the disputed gas-rich islands between the two countries. South Korea said it had a right to conduct the survey. Tensions lessened after the Japanese coast guard said it would not seize the ship and South Korea said the vessel would probably return home July 6 after completing the survey.
