The Indian government has banned export of sugar till the end of the current financial year
Media Release
Jul. 5, 2006

The Indian government has banned export of sugar till the end of the current financial year, that is 31 March 2007.

The ban would, however, not be applicable on preferential quota sugar exports to the United States and European Union, according to a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Sugar exports to the US and EU would be permitted only through the Indian Sugar Exim Corporation Ltd up to a quantitative ceiling notified by DGFT, it said. The government had last month banned exports of pulses and eased the norms for import of sugar and wheat as part of measures to check rising prices of essential commodities. The notification allows for shipment of the commodity against the contracts in which Letters of Credit were opened before 22 June this year, when the government had announced its decision to ban exports.
