The Iraqi government declared a state of emergency in Baghdad on June 23 and established a curfew from 2 p.m. until 6 a.m. June 24 after insurgents set up roadblocks on Haifa Street north of the Green Zone. U.S. and Iraqi troops cordoned off the area and conducted house-to-house searches for militants after insurgents engaged troops using rocket-propelled grenades and rifles. Meanwhile, gunmen attacked a group of worshippers marching from Sadr City to the Buratha Mosque to protest the recent suicide attack against the mosque.
