IBM on Tuesday launched a new business class mainframe in India, seeking to expand its footprint into the rapidly-growing mid-market enterprises
Media Release
Jun. 21, 2006

IBM on Tuesday launched a new business class mainframe in India, seeking to expand its footprint into the rapidly-growing mid-market enterprises.

Senior company executives told a news conference here the new System z9 business class mainframe is a "leap in technology that makes the mainframe affordable to every customer without compromising on the legendary qualities of reliability, scalability and security".

They said the system, which features a new speciality engine and capabilities, has been priced to expand mainframe footprint into mid-market companies and emerging markets.

"The new mainframe is expected to play a growing role in healthcare and retail as it increasingly is used to process sensitive data that is progressively more shared especially in an emerging market such as India," said Jim Stallings, general manager of System z9, IBM Systems and Technology Group.

Alok Ohrie, Director of Systems and Technology Group, IBM India, said the company's effort to modernise corporate and government IT infrastructure is "uniquely served" by IBM's System z9.

"The rapid expansion of mid-market enterprises in India, as well as the immense pool of potential customers, calls for a system that can start small and scale on demand to meet increased demands of consolidated workloads," he said.

IBM said the new mainframe is designed to tackle the "critical computing challenges of our time: the coming wave of automated Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) implementations, new heightened expectations for data security and the rapid expansion of emerging markets."
