India must drop Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, Nagaland and all minority states to stop racism, torture and rape
Suresh Bhatia, Special Correspondent
August 17, 2004
What has gone on in Manipur is not acceptable. The Manmohan Government has failed to control the troops, acted with little effort and provided no comfort for India. Manipur is boiling. People in Manipur feel they are racially discriminated by mainstream North or South Indians. United Nations must intervene at this stage. Manmohan Government should resign immediately if India wants to keep North East India as part of India. It is disgusting to know what a democratically elected Government has done. Sonia – shame on you! Act now! There is no need to send Gen Vij! The Armed Forces Special Powers Act must be dropped from the whole country now!
Nagaland, Assam, Tripura – all want Armed Forces Special Powers Act abolished. This act allows Indians from other states to come in as security forces and exercise racism on states like Assam, Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and so on.
Remember, India has started the same path that Pakistan took in 1970 to lose part of its country now called Bangladesh. Gen Vij – you area great military person! Please tell our Government that you will halt all operations unless Manipur is given proper attention and the culprits who raped and tortured are punished. Greatness in your Uniform comes from treating people equally and maintaining justice. Manomohan Singh, when you come to US, Manipuris will be waiting for you for inaction and injustice!
Kofi Annan – you must intervene! India is a great country but it is infested with racism. That is why we have Kashmir, Manipur, Nagaland and so on.
It is time for action! It is time to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act and make all of India feel that they are Indians and not foreigners!
