What is viagra? - Vajpayee
Sudhir Chadda, India Daily Political correspondent from New Delhi

In a recent BJP rural campeign meeting a man shouted from behind - Vajpayeeji you are great! Rahul Gandhi claims you and other BJP leaders need viagra. Are you on viagra? Vajpayee looked at the man with a perplexed look and asked his aid by the side - what is Viagra? Unfortunately the mike was on and his viagra ignorance got out in public.

In recent days Rahul Gandhi has brought out a very valid point. The BJP leaders are old fashioned and simply old in age. He may be right. In a country where sixty percent voters are young and the future prosperity depends on the vigor of the youth, old politicians should provide a chance to young new comers. BJP has started cursing Rahul as foreigner, novice, immature etc. It may very well backfire and explode in their face. It is not funny that the Prime Minister of a Country like India never heard of Viagra. Rahul Gandhi is sophisticated. He has lived in US and UK for long enough to be able to negotiate with the West strongly and diplomatically. India is no longer a developing third world country. It is a major power. That power came from hard work of every Indian - the students, the farmers, the workers, the homemakers. This power did not come from politicians. As a matter of fact, if compare strength of India in terms of economy, fiscal policy and defense, you will find, India is weakest in defense and fiscal policy. These are two areas where politicians could have made some difference. What is badly needed in India is politicians who are educated outside India and has international exposure to take the country forward. A proper mix of young and old politicians is the best. Old Soviet Union polit-bureau was full of oldies. Look what happened to them. Look at the age of Bush, Clinton, Musharraf, Putin. Look the way Vajpee goes and meets international leaders. He is a great leader but he must bring in young blood in the cabinet especially those who has international exposure. We know BJP will win. Does BJP have the guts to bring Rahul in as a minister in the cabinet and show the world a new example of patriotism and prudent political behavior. Otherwise we will keep hearing from Indian politicians - what is Viagra?
